quartersawing
To saw a log into quarters along its axis, revealing certain grain patterns that would otherwise not be apparent.
Quartz
The family name for naturally occurring crystals composed of Silica or Silicon Dioxide
Quartzite
A hard metamorphic rock converted from quartz sandstone through heating and pressure.
Quatrefoil
An ornamental design of four lobes or leaves resembling a flower or four-leaf clover.
Quill
A bobbin used to hold weft thread. The quill fits inside a larger shuttle. Originally the spine of a feather was used for this purpose, but today a quill often consists of a tube of heavy paper.
Quilling
A type of ornamental craftwork involving the shaping of paper, fabric, or glass into delicate pleats or folds.
Quilted Wood
A section of hardwood (as in maple, bubinga, or cherry) with an elaborately figured grain.
